For India, during 2015-2020, i.e. in Dhoni’s last years of captaincy and Virat’s early years of captaincy, it looked like they were playing some kind of musical chair for the No. 4 batsman in ODIs.

In this article, we’ll take a look at which all batsmen have been tested at No. 4 during this period and what their performance has been. (Sorted by no. of runs scored)

1. Ajinkya Rahane

Batting at No. 4, Rahane is the person who has played the most innings at No. 4 from 2015-2020. He has played 16 innings and scored 628 runs at an average of 44.85 with a SR of 89.20.

Also, more defining stat is his performance against the Top Tier teams i.e the SENA countries, against SENA, he has scored 534 runs at an avg of 53.4 with a SR of 96.04.

And, I feel he could’ve been the ideal No. 4 for India in the 2019 World Cup, but the reason he wasn’t picked that he got dropped in February 2018, though Virat and co. had an option to correct this mistake by picking him after the first choice batsmen got injured, but again he couldn’t break the ‘Jinx’ of not getting selected as he was playing county cricket during the World Cup.

2. Ambati Rayudu

Batting at No. 4, Rayudu is probably the most talked person, whenever someone says ‘India No. 4’. Rayudu has scored 464 runs at No. 4 during 2015-20 with an average of 42.18 and SR 85.60.

Though the above stats look good overall but talking against SENA teams he has an average of just 30.87 with a SR of 75.30.

3. MS Dhoni

Batting at No. 4, Dhoni has scored 448 runs at an average of 40.72 with a SR of 76.84. His notable achievement at No. 4 during this period is the Man of the Series he got against Australia in January 2019.

Against SENA, he has scored 284 runs at an avg of 47.33 with a SR of 76.34.

4. Shreyas Iyer

Batting at No. 4, Shreyas has scored 398 runs at an average of 56.85 with a SR of 98.02. Though his stats are exceptionally well, most of his matches have come after the WC. And he’s currently the No. 4 for India.

Against SENA, he has scored 268 runs at an avg of 67.00 with a SR of 96.05.

5. Yuvraj Singh

Batting at No. 4, Yuvraj has scored 358 runs at an average of 44.75 with a SR of 97.54. Yuvraj too has good stats but the problem with him was his inconsistency. In his 358 runs, more than 200 runs came in just two innings.

Against SENA, he has scored 233 runs at an avg of 77.66 with a SR of 105.42.

6. Dinesh Karthik

7. Hardik Pandya

Batting at No. 4, Hardik has scored 224 runs at an average of 32.00 with a SR of 119.78. Hardik was actually never looked as a permanent No. 4, he was playing the role of a floater.

Against SENA, he has scored 175 runs at an avg of 43.75 with a SR of 120.68

8. Manish Pandey
